According to the Global Peace Index, Norway is one of the safest countries in the world and among the wealthiest. It is, however, not the safest for women.
From 2000 to 2010, 83 women were murdered by their partner or ex-partner. Seven out of 10 rapes are committed in private homes.
Every year more than 3,000 women and 2,000 children spend the night in a shelter. In 2008, 60 percent of these women were immigrants, of which 28 percent were married to Norwegian men.
A number of studies on domestic violence against women and children in Norway indicate that such violence is far more widespread than initially thought.
